Benue youths kill huge hippopotamus terrorizing waterways

A hippopotamus that was purportedly causing trouble in the waters of the Agatu Local Government Area in Benue State is said to have been slain by local youths.

The incident took place on July 6, 2023, not far from Ebete, a hamlet on the boundary of the states of Benue and Nasarawa.

The children are seen in a video killing the animal with local equipment, which was posted by Olikita Ekani, a former media assistant to Samuel Ortom, the departing governor of Benue State. According to Ekani, the young people of Agatu destroyed a monster that had been tormenting the rivers between Adeke and Ebete. This is what he said, in part:

“Agatu youths killed a monster that was terrorising their waterways between Adeke and Ebete.”

The hippopotamus was reportedly keeping fishermen inside, ruining their boats, and injuring several of them while preventing them from freely performing their work. Additionally, it was charged with ruining farmlands and consuming crops in the Agatu riverside settlements. Additionally, it was said that the same hippopotamus had murdered a person close to Makurdi's historic bridge before escaping to Agatu via the River Benue.
