Lagos Police intercept NDLEA official with illicit drugs
Police has reportedly arrested an official of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, suspected to be in possession of some illicit drugs.The NDLEA official was arrested recently by a team of policemen who were on a routine patrol on the Lagos/Abeokuta Expressway, Lagos. The Police team was said to have been led by Samuel Sunday, an Assistant Superintendent of Police. Meanwhile the suspect, identified as Kelechi, 50, reportedly had in his possession, 4 Kilogrammes of illicit substance identified as Marsh-Mallow when he was intercepted by the police. He has however, allegedly confessed that he was on his way to sell the substance which he said was given to him by his superior whom he identified as Odogwu, to go and sell. According to reports, the police acted on instinct, when they saw Kelechi in the area. The Police says Kelechi was holding a bag in a manner that security operatives suspected and then requested to know what was in the bag. It was during the search that the policemen discovered the illicit drugs including 4 Kilogrammes of Marsh-Mallow and consequently arrested him. The Police has also hinted that “The team intercepted the suspected drug courier at about 2.50p.m. at Cement Bus Stop. “The suspect identified himself as Kelechi, 50, an indigene of Abia State, attached to NDLEA office, First Gate, Tin Can Island, Lagos. “During interrogation, he confessed that the four kilogrammes of illicit drugs known as Marsh-Mallow was given to him by his superior whom he identified as Odogwu, to go and sell.” The Police have also said they have commenced further investigations and would invite the superior that was mentioned by the suspect to clarify the allegation. The NDLEA is a Federal Government regulatory agency in charge of drug policy and control in Nigeria. It was established in the 1980s in response to the rising trend in the demand for and trafficking of narcotics and psychotropic substances which adversely affected the international image of Nigerians and Nigeria in the 1980s. To effectively carryout its duty, the NDLEA brags of thousands of expert narcotic operatives and well trained support staff who work across the country. The NDLEA is strategic while carrying out its functions by establishing physical presence at international airports, seaports, border crossing and major highways; safeguarding the entry and exit of all travellers, whether Nigerian or not. In a recent arrest, operatives of a Special Unit of the NDLEA apprehended three major illicit drug syndicates in intelligence-led operations across parts of Lagos State. A statement by the spokesman for the agency, Femi Bababfemi said the operations led to the arrest of a baroness and four other kingpins with multi-billion naira worth of Cocaine, Opioids, and Loud recovered from their hideouts. He disclosed that the female head of one of the syndicates, Faith Ebele Nwankwo was arrested on Wednesday 9th August at her residence, House 6, C close, 3rd Avenue, FESTAC area of Lagos shortly after she returned from a warehouse at Plot 3432 Sola Akinsola Street, Divine Estate, Amuwo Odofin where she loaded eight cartons of tramadol 225mg into an unmarked white Honda Pilot SUV. Babafemi said, “A search of her residence and the warehouse led to the recovery of Two Million Seven Hundred and Fifty Thousand (2,750,000) pills of Tramaking, a brand of tramadol 225mg and 250mg packed in 39 cartons weighing 1,916 kilograms.
