Peter Obi Not a Member of Labour Party – Tinubu and Shettima Presents Evidence at Tribunal

Background: According to POLITICSNIGERIA, Peter Obi is not a registered member of the Labour Party in Anambra State, as claimed by President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima. In the defense hearings at the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC), the evidence was presented. Evidence Submitted: Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), the legal representative for President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima, submitted the Anambra State Labor Party membership register along with a letter from the party addressed to the INEC Chairman. The court accepted the Exhibits RA17 and RA18 despite Livy Uzoukwu (SAN), the attorney for the petitioners, objecting. Argument Put Forward: According to Tinubu and Shettima, Peter Obi allegedly left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on May 26, 2022, and joined the Labour Party (LP) the following day. They assert that on May 30, 2022, the LP had its presidential primary election, with Obi winning the right to run in the general election. Legal Support: Citing Section 77(3) of the Electoral Act, the defense claims that political parties must provide a complete list of their members to INEC at least 30 days before their presidential primary. As a result, the registration needed to be turned in by April 30, 2022. According to them, Peter Obi was still a PDP member as of that time, and his name was not on the list of members that the LP presented to INEC. Obi's Response: Peter Obi's attorney claims on his client's behalf that he was in fact a PDP member when he ran for president under the LP.
